Barnett Shale
Where in Texas is the Barnett Shale located?
The Barnett Shale is a vast deposit of natural gas that is located beneath over a dozen counties in northeastern Texas, and currently accounts for 6% of total natural gas production in the United States. This valuable natural energy resource was discovered in 1951, but has been largely inaccessible because of an inability to drill vertically in surface area cities such as Dallas and Fort Worth or in other areas where other circumstances do not allow for a vertical well. Due to recent technological advancements in the areas of hydraulic fracking and lateral drilling, however, the large deposits of gas located in these regions can now be extracted at completions up to 8,000 feet.
Because natural gas is locked within the shale itself, it can only be released through high pressure and heating. This is generally accomplished by pumping immense amounts of liquids and materials into the rock itself, causing fractures that allow for the gas to be released. Fracking can be controversial, however, and so it is important to have a skilled Texas oil and gas law lawyer at your service who can keep you abreast of the rules and regulations regarding these new means of drilling in the Barnett Shale. One of the most critical concerns about hydraulic fracturing is the fact that its flowback water can poison water supplies if inappropriately executed. This is a serious matter and requires the highest degree of attention for commercial drilling operations that can only use this method as a means of extraction.
