The Bakken Formation

Bakken Formation Oil and Gas Deposits

Located over 200,000 square miles of the subsurface in North Dakota, Montana and part of Canada, the Bakken Formation is a massive source rock that contains a most recently estimated 18 billion barrels of oil. Due to immense challenges in terms of reaching these oil deposits through drilling, the Bakken Formation has been largely untapped. Recent technological advancements have opened this region up to a great deal of drilling opportunities, however, and companies and landowners alike are clamoring to build long and fruitful relationships with one another in order to extract the necessary oil resources safely and with great financial reward.

Interested in oil drilling leases in the Bakken Formation?

There are already a large number of commercial oil drilling corporations with various active drilling sites throughout the Bakken Formation in Montana and North Dakota, but this does not mean there are no more opportunities to build relationships with landowners who haven't yet negotiated the rights to use their land. Elm Coulee Oil Field in Richland County, Montana is the current source for the most Bakken oil production with an estimated total of 270 million barrels. More interesting, however, is the area around Parshall, North Dakota where other wells have reported massive amounts as well. This is clear evidence that the Bakken Formation is largely untapped and will yield great rewards for drilling operations and landowners for many years to come.
